BOOKS, GUNS, EDUCATION: ON A REGRESSIVE DEVICE

The difficulty of working through the past of violence and authoritarian forces in Brazil reaches a top point in the challenge of the memory of the civil-military dictatorship that began in 1964. This paper results from a research about a pedagogical device that takes part in this dispute, the revisionist film 1964: Brazil between guns and books, produced by Brasil Paralelo. It analyzes the content and some of the technical and aesthetic options that are also substantial for the narrative construction. The propose is to make an immanent critique of the material and, when the analytical frame is ready, to take in account the picture as a symptom and also observing it in some of its consequences for the education (Bildung) – or its failure – in the contemporary world.
