The Paulo Freire's concept of critical insertion and the Universidade Sertaneja do Cariri

The article seeks to explore Paulo Freire's theoretical contributions for genesis of an institution that reflects the culture and history of the people of Cariri, a sertaneja university. The article argues that a sertanejo university can actively oppose the model of education centered on capital's (re)production project, which ignores the historical and cultural characteristics of the semi-arid region, training manpower to meet market demands. By combating the logic of standardization and commodification, the university can become a space that promotes Northeastern culture as a valid way of life. In this sense, Paulo Freire is highlighted as a fundamental theoretical reference for understanding the role of the oppressed in the process of occupation and appropriation of the UFCA.
