SENSES ATTRIBUTED BY YOUTH IN THE CITY OF BARREIRAS-BA TO THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP (1964-1985) AND THE CHALLENGES OF DEMOCRACY

The study examines how a group of young high school students interpret the historical period that encompasses the military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985) and how their perceptions relate to events that occurred between 2016 and January 2023, a period during which Brazilian democracy was under threat. It is based on a qualitative methodology, utilizing interviews, history, memory, and life stories of the participants as primary tools. The research results reveal that, despite being in high school, only 54.55% of students present a relatively critical perception of the military dictatorship, although many of them are confused and scattered about the period. It concludes that historical understanding is vital to strengthen a democratic political culture and prevent authoritarian setbacks.
