BLACK NOBILITY IN ‘BRIDGERTON’: NEGROPHILIA AND CONTROLLING IMAGES IN A NETFLIX PRODUCTION

‘Bridgerton’, a cultural production launched by Netflix in 2020, cast black actors in noble roles, thus establishing a kind of ambivalent representation that mobilizes and divides internet users opinions. Considering that, the main objective of this article is to discuss some forms of controlling and consuming the image of the black by taking as empirical materiality a set of comments made by Internet users and posted on Mundo Negro news portal, a virtual place where antiracist agendas are presented. The methodology involves the cultural analysis of 70 comments, corresponding to the total of existing posts below a journalistic article about the ‘Bridgerton’ series. Grounded on concepts such as representation (Hall, 2016), controlling images (Collins, 2016) and negrophilia (Archer-Straw, 2000), the discussion has enabled us to understand how internet users react to the positions created for black characters in the series.
