LANGUAGE IN PRISON: A STUDY ON SLANG IN A PENITENTIARY IN PARANÁ

This article aims to analyze the influence of prison culture on language construction and how this dynamic affects the constitution of the incarcerated subject. Based on Vygotsky’s Historical-Cultural Theory (1993; 2000), the study employs bibliographic research and the first author’s professional experience in a penitentiary in Paraná. The central question is to understand how prison culture shapes and transforms the language of people deprived of liberty. The results indicate that prison slang goes beyond communication, functioning as cultural and psychological instruments expressing belonging, symbolic mediation, and resistance. It is concluded that language, by revealing processes of re-signification and identity, becomes a tool for cultural and subjective survival in a space of silencing and exclusion.
