Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different combinations of nitrogen and phosphorous levels on leaf area, leaf dry matter and tillers number of Panicum maximum Jacq. Cv. Mombaça. The experiments were carried out in a green house at "Escola de Agronomia e Engenharia de Alimentos/Universidade Federal de Goiás". The plants were grown in plastic pots (9.0 dm3) filled up with 7.0 dm3 of dark-red latossolo. The treatments constituted

200 and 400 mg/dm3 of N) and four doses of phosphorous (0, 250, 500 and 750 mg/dm3 of P) with four replications for each treatment. The Nitrogen doses were supplied three times with interval of ten days for each period of growth measurements. The experimental design was complete randomized and the treatments arranged in a complete factorial (24), the doses of nitrogen and phosphorous being the factors. Sixty days after the emergency of the plants a cut off (20 cm height from the soil) was carried out in other to uniform aerial parts length. To proceed the growth measurements the aerial parts of the plants were harvested by cutting off them 20 cm height from the soil level with 30 days intervals between each harvest. The results showed that nitrogen doses between 300 and 400 mg/dm3 of N when combined with phosphorous doses between 250 and 500 mg/dm3 of P are the most indicated for working with Mombaça grass at green house conditions.
