About the Journal

Brief History

The journal Ciência Animal Brasileira | Brazilian Animal Science (CAB), e-ISSN 1809-6891, originated from the division of the Annals of the Schools of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), created in 1971. Launched in 2000, CAB emerged as an initiative of the current School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at UFG, with the purpose of disseminating scientific knowledge in the fields of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, and related areas.

In 2006, the journal was incorporated into the UFG Journal Portal and adopted the Open Journal Systems (OJS) electronic editorial platform, strengthening its digital publishing workflow. The print version (p-ISSN 1518-2797) was discontinued in 2010, and since then the entire editorial process has taken place exclusively online, reducing costs, improving communication with authors and reviewers, and increasing the efficiency of manuscript processing. CAB provides free and unrestricted access to all published issues and volumes and does not charge any submission or publication fees.

From its creation in 2000 until 2019, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief was Prof. José Henrique Stringhini (UFG). Between 2020 and 2021, the position was jointly held by Prof. João Restle (UFSM/UFG) and Prof. Luiz Augusto Batista Brito (UFG). Since 2022, CAB has been led by two Editors-in-Chief: Prof. Luiz Augusto B. Brito (UFG) and Prof. Rondineli Pavezzi Barbero (UFRRJ).

The Editorial Board is composed of specialists from national and international institutions who are committed to the continuous improvement of the journal, the advancement of its internationalization process, and the expansion of its presence in major indexing databases. Among the indexers, notable examples include SciELO, which has provided open access to all CAB articles since 2013; Scopus, since 2012; and Web of Science, since 2024, through the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). In 2025, the journal received its first evaluation in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), achieving an impact factor of 0.4.

To increase its international visibility, CAB began publishing exclusively in English in 2017. Beginning in 2019, the journal adopted a bilingual format (English and Portuguese) for its articles. Although the predominance of English in scientific communication is recognized, the journal has maintained publication in Portuguese due to its importance for a significant portion of its readership, composed also of professionals outside the academic community, and to ensure broader societal impact, given the direct applicability of the content published.

In 2020, the journal renewed its visual identity with the creation of a new logo* and an updated article layout, aiming to enhance readability and user experience.

CAB is funded by the UFG, through the policies of the UFG Journal Portal, by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of UFG, and by the Editorial Support Program of CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). Resources from these funding sources allow the journal to offer free access to all articles with no submission or publication charges.
