Abstract

This study compares the reproductive strategy of Miconia fallax and Matayba guianensis in an area of Cerrado sensu strictu and another of Cerradão. The characters analyzed were: fruit weight, number of seeds per fruit, seed and aril weight (the latter registered only for M. guianensis). In the Cerradão area, M. fallax presented heavier fruits with larger seeds but in a lower number when compared to the plants of the Cerrado area. M. guianensis from the Cerrado area presented arils significantly heavier than those from the Cerradão area, while the other features did not differ significantly between areas. The greater aril biomass of the Cerrado plants is probably associated to competition of seed dispersal birds, since arils are generally rich in nutrients and important elements in the diet of these animals. The occurrence of a trade-off between seed size and seed number was registered for M. fallax. The investment of M. fallax in heavier seeds in the Cerradão area may be an adaptation to maximize seed germination and growth in this shady environment.
