The objective of this work is the historical-biographical contextualization and musical analysis with considerations about the text-music relationship of the work Cantata do Soldado Morto (Cantata of the Dead Soldier), by Eunice Katunda. To this end, we established analytical focuses in three specific sections and used theoretical resources presented by Stefan Kostka (2018), Joel Lester (1989), Joseph N. Straus (2005) and Jonathan Dunsby (2004). Through musical analysis, we perceive two set classes, diverging from each other, and extensive modal material, which structure the work. We suggest that these sets symbolize, in music, the diatonic tradition in contrast to the post-tonal avant-garde, in constant friction throughout the piece. We observed, through the connection between subsets, modal material, textures, timbres, dynamics and articulations, that there is a strong relationship between musicality and changes in the character of the poetic text.
