Abstract

Introduction: The preservation of cultural identity is crucial, especially in traditional music from Extremadura, which is still not included in the region's conservatories. Despite the relevance of folk music in music pedagogies, the educational legislation in Extremadura does not include the teaching of its folklore, which impacts cultural and ethnomusicological identity. The purpose of this study is to analyse the fundamental descriptive metrics of scientific production related to the presence of traditional and popular music in music education. Method: To that end, a bibliometric study has been conducted based on works indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases related to the binomial «folklore» OR «popular music» OR «traditional music» AND «music* education», within a time period from 1910 to 2024. Results: The metrics employed demonstrate that the exponential growth observed in this field since 2007 is indicative of a surge in research interest, with American and English institutions emerging as leaders in research productivity. A notable presence of studies published in both Educational Research and Arts and Humanities journals is evident. The indicators obtained point to a discernible trend towards the integration of novel repertoires in teaching methodologies.
