This research presents the state of the art of academic production of the Scientific Olympiads in the field of Science Education in Brazil, from 2000 to 2016. The analysis approaches six articles and three dissertations to inventory, systematize, and evaluate scientific production within the Scientific Olympiads in the educational sphere published on official scientific dissemination portals and Brazilian Stricto Sensu postgraduate programs. The results display that the Scientific Olympiads, as university extension actions, can contribute to students as a pedagogical resource to motivate them to learn Science. However, the study underscores the necessity for a broader discussion on the topic, to promote further research addressing theoretical issues and the consequences that these may have based on their relationship with formal education, given the high financial investments made by public authorities in holding these Olympics.
