Losing the fear of singing: a musical education practice in an Elementary Teacher Training Programme
This paper presents an action research developed as an extension course at the Federal University of XX. The targeted participants were five elementary school teachers who considered themselves tone deaf. Research began from the premise thta if the preservice teacher believes that they can not sing in tune, this self perception may lead to a blockage in their relationship with music, resulting in a negative effect on their future activities as a teacher. The main objective of the study was to modify the negative senses that the participants had about their abilities to sing in tune. The intervention offered musical education activities with the central focus on singing. The text explains the pedagogical activities that were developed as well as the analysis of the participants' testimonies obtained during interviews conducted before and after these interventions. Although the action was restricted to a small number of encounters, the collected data indicates that vocal activities, ear training exercises and tasks with creative characteristics conducted in a welcoming environment, could alter the personal relationship established with their singing voice, making them more confident and allowing their relationship with music to become more positive.
