In this work we approach Luigi Nono's creative processes in order to outline a mode of “composing by ear”, or “with-position” as reciprocal positioning with the other, through engaged listening. We add to this theory his interest in experimentation with text and voice, in the creative collaborative process with the interpreters and in experimentation in electroacoustic studio. We highlight the revelations found in his own writings and how his ideas materialized in his compositions between 1965-1985, especially in his works “A floresta é jovem e cheia de vida” (1965-66) e “A Pierre. Dell’azzurro silenzio, inquietum” (1985). We conclude that for Nono composing by “ear” is as important as composing by “head”.
