Analyzing the school process that emerged from the encounter between different groups of immigrants, in which negotiations and tensions generated by differences were present, as well as mapping the public, private, and confessional initiatives that allowed the nascent municipality to have schools is the purpose of the article. The time frame of the analysis covers the period of colonization, 1898 and extends until 1929 when, five years after the emancipation of the municipality of Prata, the School Group of Prata was established. The historical documentary analysis mobilized reports from the Town Hall administration, photographs, newspapers, Book of Records (Livro de Tombo) and mail. The theoretical framework was derived from Cultural History and History of Education. School initiatives and the meeting of different groups in the living space, the classroom, produced negotiations, tensions, and demands on teachers.
