During a study of zoosporic aquatic organisms (Saprolegniales, Peronosporomycetes), the authors found a species identified as Protoachlya paradoxa. This is the first characterization of the genus Protoachlya and the above-mentioned species in Argentina. In this article, we described and illustrated P. paradoxa isolated in culture medium, from water samples and organic plant material collected near an agricultural field through which the Carnaval stream flows, in the city of La Plata (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), located in the Neotropical region (Chaqueño domain). We provided a detailed and complete description of the species, ecological observations, and photographic images of the characteristic structures of the species, as well as a key to distinguish it from P. papillata, a species that also occurs in the Southern Cone of South America (Brazil, Neotropical region, Amazonian Domain).
