The taxonomic identity of species is a subject of discussion that has been carried out until today and will continue as the volume of information on species increases. For a correct analysis it is necessary to work on the identification from its origins, understanding how the authors identified and interpreted the morphological characters that characterize the different taxa. In this study, a bibliographic review of the articles corresponding to the descriptions of the species of the genus Pristimantis that are distributed in the municipality of Santa Maria, located in the department of Huila, Colombia, was carried out. Twelve potential species were found, of which eight are very probable, three are moderately probable and one is not very probable. From this review, a matrix of 80 characters was constructed taking into account the original descriptions corresponding to the head, fingers, skin texture, folds, tubercles, preserved coloration and coloration in life. This review was carried out in order to identify the objectivity of the characters used to describe species of this genus and to propose alternatives to standardize the characters that present ambiguity in the descriptions. Finally, these characters were contrasted with specimens found in the field to analyze their correct interpretation.
