Records of beak deformation in two species of woodpeckers in southern Brazil
Keywords:
anomaly, birds, beak, conservation, deformityAbstract
Beak deformities have been recorded several times in Brazil over the last few years, with 35 species having been found with these conditions in this country. In the present study we made the first records of beak deformities in Piculus aurulentus and Dryocopus lineatus for Brazil. Information on the behavior performed by these birds at the time of their records is presented. P. aurulentus had difficulty to forage and changed its behavior, due to the high degree of deformity of its beak. And D. lineatus, was able to forage as expected for Picidae, but with some difficulty to capture insects.
