Abstract

Teaching and learning are inseparable and there is a search for methods that transform knowledge into attitudes. With this in mind, a study was carried out on the tapir (T. terrestris), to establish a theoretical framework that foster meaningful learning around its conservation. Bibliographical research was undertaken, being noted that paleontological data, morphological and mitochondrial studies, karyotype analyses, nuclear genes and genomic sequences indicate that the species’ phylogeny and evolution are not well established. There is unanimity regarding the scarcity and incompleteness of the fossil record of the group to which it belongs. From an educational point of view, a transdisciplinary bioecological approach to the species is suggested. Fossils of it are cited for the South American Upper Pleistocene, the period in which Homo sapiens is believed to have arisen. Considering its hunting value, the human species must have participated in shaping its evolutionary history, as cave drawings from the Pleistocene/Holocene transition suggest. Therefore, there is a chain of events that can be used to foster critical reflexive analysis of the human being as a social builder of nature and an agent for the preservation of the tapir. This type of approach can help plan teaching and environmental education around wildlife.
