REPLACEMENT OF MAIZE BY SORGHUM IN LAYING HENS DIETS FORMULATED TO ATTEMPT DIFFERENT CRITERIA IN AMINO ACID REQUIREMENTS

The experiment had the objective of evaluate different replacement levels of maize by sorghum in laying hen diets formulated on digestible and total amino acid basis. Lohmann LSL hens 31 weeks old were used in this trial, distributed in a completely at random design in a 2x5 factorial scheme, composed by two amino acid recommendation (total and digestible) and five replacement levels of maize by sorghum (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% e 100%) with three replications of eight birds each, totalizing two hundred-fourty hens. During five periods of 28 days performance (feed intake, egg production, egg mass and feed conversion) and egg quality (specific gravity, Haugh Unity, egg percentage and shell thickness) parameters were evaluated. Under the conditions of this experiment were not observed significant effects on performance and egg quality parameters from hens fed treatments evaluated. Results indicated maize can be replaced by sorghum; however, pigments need to be added to diets to improve yolk color. Digestible amino acid formulation did not determine benefits on parameters evaluated when compared to total amino acid basis.
