Abstract: In the history of the preservation of cultural heritage in Brazil, the state has assumed a preponderant role, through the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan). However, initiatives also occurred in other areas, such as the experience of registering heritage from a private higher education institution in the South of Brazil. In this text, the work and collection constituted by the Ecirs project, linked to the Historical and Cultural Memory Institute (IMHC) of the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS), are exposed. This project, which originated in the 1970s, produced extensive documentation alluding to the Italian immigration culture in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and worked on activities to rescue and preserve the cultural heritage of areas affected by the construction of power plant reservoirs (dams) for hydroelectric plants, in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. In the 1990s, the project achieved national recognition, being awarded the Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade award by Iphan. In order to present the constituted collection, its origin, the mechanisms and logics of its production are contextualized, and a section related to the theme “popular festivals” is offered, based on the documentation originating from the dam projects.
