Abstract

This paper aims to present elements that corroborate the importance of breaking away from the silencing of racial issues in college education. It contains observations on the insertion of the theme in extensionist actions developed within the University Extension scope, directed to Youth and Adults Education, using the experience of the Literacy Teachers Training Course as the main object of reflection. Based on Paulo Freire’s philosophy and the contributions of researchers such as Almeida (2021) and Gomes (2002, 2005a, 2005b), the study emphasizes the need of understanding race relations from the perspective of Brazilian social, political and economic conditioning factors. It also highlights the fundamental role that educational practices can play in an anti-racist education’s construction and, therefore, the importance of incorporating the ethnic-racial theme in teacher training courses.
