THE INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN THE EXERCISE OF ECOLOGICAL CITIZENSHIP AND THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO DRINKING WATER

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the interconnection between the fundamental right to drinking water and the concept of ecological citizenship, in a context of growing concern about sustainability and climate change. In view of this objective, the research aims to examine how the guarantee of access to water, an essential element for life, relates to individual and collective responsibilities in preserving the environment. To answer this question, we will first explore the right to an ecologically balanced environment, understood as a third-dimension human right. This study will be followed by an analysis of the right to drinking water, seeking to demonstrate its nature as a fundamental right intrinsically linked to the right to life, health and human dignity, as well as a subsequent exploration of the concept of ecological citizenship, highlighting the role of individual and collective responsibility in promoting environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the research adopts a hypothetical-deductive approach to validate or refute the hypothesis of the interrelation of ecological citizenship in the realization of the right to drinking water, uses the historical-analytical method to examine the evolution of the right to the environment and the concept of citizenship, and employs the technique of indirect documentary research, based on secondary bibliographic sources.
