The scholarly investigation into the adaptation of Tang Xianzu’s works in the repertoire of Kunqu opera addresses a significant aspect that facilitates a deeper understanding of dynamics and transformations within the artistic realm. The objective of this research lies in the synthesis and analysis of the process of evolution and adaptation of the works of the Chinese writer Tang Xianzu in the repertoire of Kunqu opera. To achieve the research objective, a survey was conducted among instructors in artistic institutions specializing in Kunqu opera and the works of Tang Xianzu. A noteworthy aspect of the obtained results is that instructors acknowledged the significance of changes in the staging of Kunqu opera works in shaping the understanding and appreciation of the philosophical concepts of Tang Xianzu. Additionally, there is a statistically significant difference (t-statistic -3.73) between the perception and interpretation of Tang Xianzu’s philosophical ideas in traditional opera performances and new (or modified) versions of Kunqu opera performances. The experimental group, which viewed new or modified performances, exhibited significantly different perceptions and interpretations compared to the control group, which watched traditional performances. The practical significance of this article lies in expanding the understanding of the effectiveness and impact of the evolution and adaptation of Tang Xianzu’s works in Kunqu opera. The research results provide crucial insights for theatrical directors and instructors, aiding them in better comprehending how modifications in staging affect audience perception and evoke new interpretations of philosophical concepts.
