This work seeks to identify characteristic elements of Brazilian music-theater and to understand how it responds to the expectations of a country in the process of creating its identity. We start from the assumption that Brazilian music-theater arises for different means and reasons than its European counterpart and that this takes place in a vastly different socio-cultural context. To understand this context, we resort to the reflection conducted by Canclini (1990) on the mistaken idea that artistic modernism should reflect social modernization, bringing the debate to the Latin American context, reaching the notion of hybridization. To observe how the modernization process affects music-theater, we analyzed works by Jocy de Oliveira and Gilberto Mendes, reflecting on their modes of creation and reception.
