Abstract

This study aims at identifying the presence of characteristic elements of the traditional choro in the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal aspects in Camargo Guarnieri’s piano work Choro Torturado. The purpose is to determine the level of compositional departure in this piece by establishing a relationship with a paradigm of the choro genre of the same period. These compositional departures are based on the definition of pantonality as established by Rudolph Reti (1958).
Keywords: choro, Guarnieri, pantonality, musical analysis.
