This article aims at presenting and discussing some results of the research entitled “From selection to the act of reading: the books of Programa Nacional do Livro e do Material Didático (PNLD / Literário 2018)”. Our main aim is to verify how the books from that program can be combined with the reading comprehension methodology to transform students from the early years of elementary school in schools, located in the city of João Pessoa-PB, into independent readers. A questionnaire was elaborated and applied to the teachers who participated in the choice of literary works in order to investigate the ways of dissemination and guidance they received to carry out the selection of books. The results point out certain flaws regarding the selection and delays in the distribution of the program’s books.
