Abstract

It was found that 36 universities offer the career of biology but with very different approaches and study plans. There was also an increase in the offer of biology programs in recent years and especially after the formulation and entry in to force of Law 30 of 1992. An analysis of the occupation for the year 2020 revealed that 58.1 % of graduates are employed in 18 of the 36 universities; and less than 50 % of graduates are working in 13 universities. Universities recognized for their academic trajectory and prestige in the country (UN, U. Antioquia among the public institutions, U. Javeriana and U. de los Andes among the private) registered higher percentage values (greater than 50 %) of employed graduates. The Universidad del Valle, tracks below 50 % (48.1 %) of employment of its graduates in that year 2020 of full confinement by Covid-19. The cost/semester in public universities in Colombia ranges from $23 360 or less to around $1 500 000 per semester; in private universities the cost is much higher, ranging from $1 950 999 to $19 492 000/semester). Thus, the higher cost in private Universities is evident, a situation that reflects the academic and social gap in Colombian universities enrollment, and as such the social inequity that is perceived in the country.
