The central objective of this article is to reflect and analyze the experiences lived by black students from
the UBUNTU/NUPEAAs Scientific Initiation Project (Center for African, Afro-Brazilian and Diaspora
Studies) for High School at the State Department of Education of MG (SEE -MG) promoted by the ICEB
program (Basic Education Scientific Initiation). The focus of this investigation will be on two public
schools in the city of Governador Valadares/MG where the activities of this project were developed. In
relation to our methodological path, we chose to prioritize the qualitative approach to educational research,
using a questionnaire with students who graduated from the project. The results achieved in this research
showed that the actions of the Scientific Initiation project contributed to young black students acquiring
knowledge in the area of science and also an opportunity to recognize their ethnic-racial identity in the
school environment, still marked by prejudice and racism
