Situated in the field of relations between the school tradition of Geography and the foundation of academic geography in Brazil, this paper analyzes the characteristics and the impact of the tradition and the school material culture of the Escola Normal Caetano de Campos (ENCC) on the foundation and the first insertions of the geography community of São Paulo in the scenario of educational and academic-scientific debates of the Brazilian Geography. We argue that the material culture of the ENCC is relevant to its definition as a public institution of reference and school screening for the academic geography that was being formed in São Paulo. This text is articulated to the analysis of the so-called ENCC didactic dossiers, which reveal the activation of the modernizing principles of geography teaching, allied to the discourses of nationality and regionalization of the territory produced through textual and imagistic surfaces conveyed by the teaching practice of ENCC, which are associated with the then newly founded academic-scientific geography of São Paulo.
