In this article, we present the results of an exploratory study that had as its theme the theory of meaningful learning in school geography. The Theory of Meaningful Learning was developed by David Ausubel in the 1960s and its approach is focused on school learning. Dissertations and theses published in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) database were analyzed. The study aimed to analyze the production of academic research that relates the teaching of geography and Ausubel's Theory of Meaningful Learning, from 1990 to 2020. It was produced from the methodological approach of the state of the art. I was sought to identify in the research, the objects of investigation, the methodology used, the investigated subjects and the teaching strategies developed based on Ausubel's theory. This work aims to disseminate theoretical-methodological knowledge about the Theory of Meaningful Learning emphasizing on teaching-learning processes in school geography. The results of this study confirm the existence of important gaps to be filled, although they foresee the expansion of this theme with the formulation of new research objects.
