DEVELOPMENT OF GEOGRAPHICAL THINKING AND CITIZEN TRAINING: A LOOK FROM THE LIVING SPACE

Abstract

The article presents a general overview of the relevance of geographic education for enhancing civic engagement, from the perspective of the relationship between citizens and geographic spaces. It is organized in three complementary sections. First, the relationship between geographic education and citizenship education is contextualized. Second, an analysis of the relevance of geographical thought and the formation of geographically informed citizens is presented. Third, the results of the research, developed at the University of La Serena, are presented with the objective being the promotion of the development of geographic thinking skills in middle school students in the Coquimbo Region. In this way, the research contributes to the dissemination of the importance of geographic education for training geographically literate citizens, aware of their rights and the richness of their territories and localities.
