In this study, we investigate how Brazilian learners of English produce the
vowel durations of members of minimal pairs ending in [s] and [z], such
as ‘niece’ [s]’ versus ‘knees’ [z]. The data were obtained through a reading
task of 60 target-sentences, with 20 participants who had been leveled in two proficiency groups. The analyses of both absolute and relative durational values showed that the L2 learners are producing longer vowels preceding [z], regardless of their proficiency group.
