This paper discusses concepts of the dialogic theory of language from the Bakhtin Circle, namely, word, utterance, speech genres, chronotope, and verbal interaction. These concepts are explained by the characterization of the classroom as a social institution, and the class as a discourse genre intercalated with other genres. The concepts are applied to natural settings of the classroom, inside the Portuguese class, revealing the ethnographic establishment of the verbal interaction process. We conclude that by understanding the class from such conceptions helps to form reflective teachers, who are able to analyzeand transform their practice, making the process of teaching and learning Portuguese language more meaningful to the teacher himself/herself and to the students.
