This paper presents the results of an analysis of the cognitive processes used by five learners of Portuguese as a L2 to infer the meaning of idioms, based on the concepts of cognitive and interactional frames conceived by Fillmore (1982) and Fillmore & Baker (2010). The analysis of data carried out through the verbal protocol technique suggests that the explanatory potential of the frame theory is also applicable to the comprehension of meaning attribution to idioms in L2, be it through the notion of cognitive frame or interactional frame.Downloads
