This study examines the novel So Long a letter, by Mariama Bâ, through the prism of its inscription in the two cultural systems present in Dakar, Senegal, at the time the narrative was written (1979): hyperand hypoculture. In order to demonstrate this inscription within the two cultural systems, we analyze the establishment of the narrative voice, as well as the composition of female characters who are important to the unfolding of the plot. The study led to the conclusion that the tensions experienced in the context of post-independence Senegal are present in Bâ’s text in these two narratological categories. This research was based on works by Diop (1993), Dia (2003), among others.
