Abstract

This article aims to understand the use/importance of the viola caipira in the Folia de Reis festival in São Francisco, located in the northern region of Minas Gerais, from the perspective of intangible cultural heritage. To this end, we divided the analysis into three parts. First, we will present the city of São Francisco and its cultural manifestations; in the second part, we will trace a short biography of the luthier Minervino Gonçalves Rodrigues Guimarães (1929-2009), one of the most important characters in that region and, finally, in the third part, we will analyze the presence and use of the viola caipira in the Folia de Reis. With this, we intend to contribute to the dissemination/ valorization/ recognition of the intangible cultural heritage of São Francisco.
