The theme of selective collection has been gaining prominence for having a high relevance in social and environmental issues. Selective collection cooperatives have become a strategy for a portion of the population and governments. This paper aims to analyze the socio-economic profile of collectors in a cooperative of recyclable materials in Petrolina, city of Pernambuco, Brazil. For this, a 48-question questionnaire was developed with 14 discursive and 34 multiple-choice responses. The questionnaires addressed personal data such as age, gender, marital status, education, and monthly income, in addition to work-related aspects such as cooperative time, and change in quality of life. The questionnaire was applied to the members of various sectors through individual interviews. The discursive answers were analyzed qualitatively. The multiple-choice responses were analyzed through simple descriptive statistics of the percentage type. Despite the high employee turnover rate, 13 collectors' responses were obtained during this period. Of the total interviewees, 61.5% (8) identified themselves as males and 38.5% (5) identified themselves as female. Concerning degree of education, 38.5% of employees have incomplete high school (5), while those who have incomplete elementary school correspond to 30.8% (4), literate 7.7% (1), incomplete higher education 7.7% (1), and complete elementary school 7.7% (1). Selective collection is of paramount importance for the conservation of the environment. The work of pickers directly impacts the quantities of separate waste in the existing selective collection programs in Brazil and should result in a greater appreciation of the category and receipt of payments for urban environmental services.
