Abstract

The city of São Sebastião do Paraíso, Minas Gerais, holds the history of one of the most traditional celebrations of the Congada de Minas, a cultural event in the process of being registered by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute – IPHAN. Developed within the scope of the environmental licensing process, this research sought to understand the relationships established between memory and tradition and how the collective identities of knowledge holders who effectively participate in the Congada de São Sebastião do Paraíso are constructed to evaluate the likely risks that threaten the disappearance of this tradition. Based on documentary sources and semi-structured interviews, the article summarizes the local population's perception of the future of Congada, which is increasingly being disfigured, leaving religiosity, tradition, and congadeiros in the background.
