This article presents a survey carried out at a
federal university, which aimed to rescue the trajectory of an
extension action undertaken for the implementation of the
assistance policy for deaf students in the municipality. For
this, we carried out a qualitative research, using the case
study as a method and, as a data collection instrument, the
consultation of the documents and minutes of the process
and the semi-structured interview to survey the testimonies
of employees participating in this nucleation process. The
analyzes were performed based on content analysis (Bardin,
2011). Two questions guided the investigation: what was the
importance of this policy for the local deaf community? And
currently, how is the functioning of the nucleation of deaf
students at school? The results show that the municipality
was a pioneer in the region in treating deaf education as an
education that has its specificities, understanding the
importance of considering deaf people as part of their own
culture and community and that the nucleation process
needs a continuity in monitoring, in the continued training of
professionals and in investments, so that it can consolidate
itself as an effective action in the education of the deaf.
