Abstract

In this article, communication, citizenship and media are discussed based a Paulo Freire theoretical framework, arguing how communication and media processes inter-relate with the concept of citizenship, in the context of a society characterized by consumption. With this in mind, a very short historical review is undertaken of communication and media processes and of the evolution of the concept of citizenship, as well as how the media and consumption have become fundamental elements in the understanding and exercise of citizenship in today’s society.
