Abstract

The study is part of an effort by researchers in the history of professional education, who dedicate themselves to the study of a historical period marked by sporadic training actions for professional education in the context of the emerging urbanization, industrialization and liberalism in the 19th century. Text that contributes to the reflection on the existence of professional education through the organization of institutions for the protection and learning of trades, from the perspective of assistance and the re-education of minors. Based on specific bibliographic and documentary research, we observed that during nineteenth-century Brazil, educational legislation was established that referred to the shelter of orphans in conjunction with professional training for mechanical and manufacturing work, as an alternative for the survival of the poorest and most deprived.
