Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the social fear that exists in Goiás, considering as a case study, the fear in relation to gypsies. The hypothesis is that the society of Goiás was constituted from a utopia of civilization that was a source of fear and anguish, as it caused a distrust in all groups that expressed a culture different from the European standard, such as Africans, Indians, mestizos and gypsies. The article is divided into three topics: in the first, it analyzes social fear from authors such as Norbert Elias, Jean Delumeau, Mike Davis, among others; in the second, it contextualizes the presence of fear of the other in the context of historical formation in Goiás; in the third, it analyzes the fear of the gypsies present in the society of Goiás.
