Abstract

The purpose of this study was to characterize the sagittae of Cichla sp. and Cichla monoculus introduced into the Volta Grande hydroelectric dam, as well as the relation of their length and width with their total length. Specimens were collect bimonthly in April and June 1997 and monthly from September 1997 to August 1998. The morphological measurements of length and width of the otoliths and their relation to the fishes’ total length, as well as the differences between the sagittae of the two species, are presented and discussed. The otoliths of Cichla monoculus exhibited more evident and wider crenulations than those of Cichla sp., taking into account the same total lengths. KEY WORDS: Cichla, otolith, peacock bass, rio Grande, sagitta
