Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare two selection criteria for growth speed in beef buffaloes. For this purpose, the traits “daily weight gain from birth to wean” (GWB) and “days to gain 160 kg from birth to wean” (D160) had been compared. To compare both criteria, we used Pearson and Spearman correlation of the predicted breeding values of each individual. The direct heritability estimative for both traits were similar and equal to 0.42. As for the maternal heritability, the values presented low magnitude, being equal to 0.05 and 0.03 for GWB and D160, respectively. A high degree of Pearson and Spearman correlation was observed between both selection criteria when all animals were analyzed. However, the scoring of the best 20 breeders was modified according to the selected criterion.

KEY WORDS: Buffalo, daily weight gain, growth precocity.
