The aim of this research was the seasonal characterization of a natural pasture in the savannah. The experiment was conducted in an area of seven hectares at the Experimental Farm of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, in Santo Antônio do Leverger, from february to april and from july to september in 2004. The area was under grazing, assuring a forage allowance of more than 6%. It was realized the floristic survey, the total dry matter, using the Comparative Yield and the Dry Weight Rank methods, the percentage of ground cover, the height, the forage density, dry matter and crude protein content. The seasonal characterization of the pasture was realized according to the cluster analysis a multivariate statistical technique. The months were grouped considering the variables according to the Tocher method. There are 69 species belonging to 59 genus of 37 families. The families which presented the higher number of components and forage potencial were Faboidea and Poaceae. The height, the ground cover and the forage density were variables of great importance to the pasture characterization, followed by the total dry matter. The pasture was chacterized in three significant seasons: rainy, transition between rainy and dry and dry ones.KEY WORDS: Chemical composition, cluster analysis, floristic composition, sward structure.
