Causality and historical time in the relations between history and the sciences
Abstract
The relations between history and the sciences are at the heart of two important, recently-published books: A causalidade histórica, by François Simiand, and Histoire et sciences, by Lucien Febvre. From the editorial point of view, there is no connection between the two books and, indeed, they belong to different intellectual programs. Nevertheless, reading them draws attention to their thematic proximity and the historiographic problem that both projects present. I endeavor, first, to highlight the structure of those publications. Their organizers suggest that these old texts, newly re-edited, have something to tell us in the present insofar as they address problems that have been forgotten and remained unsolved but which, nevertheless, are knocking at our door. Then, I explore that aspect and underscore the relations between history and the sciences that they delineate. I go on to show how the ‘Simiand moment’ and the ‘Febvre moment’ were founded on two different stances in regard to the principle of causality. Finally, I seek to discuss two of the reasons that have led me to believe that the simultaneous publication of those two books is no coincidence, namely: our times seem to call for new relations between history and the sciences, and; in a certain way, those books make it possible to think on the problem of what historical time actually is. My reading guide will be the epistemology of history.
