Peer Review

The Revista de Teoria da História [rth] is committed to upholding the highest international ethical standards in scientific publishing. Editors must follow the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) when handling corrections and retractions and must ensure that authors and reviewers meet the highest ethical standards in their editorial practices.

Any allegation or suspicion of scientific misconduct related to manuscripts under review, in pre-publication, or already published will be independently investigated by the Editorial Board.

General Guidelines

For Associate Editors

Associate editors are responsible for verifying that submitted manuscripts are original (in the case of original articles, previously unpublished in full or in part) and that they align with the journal’s scope and guidelines as well as meet the minimum quality standards expected of work in the field of theory of history.

All manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review, which informs the editorial decision to accept, reject, or request mandatory revisions.

Authors’ personal data must be treated as confidential and privileged. Editors are not permitted to use any data, hypotheses, arguments, or conclusions from a manuscript in their own research without prior written consent from the authors.

Editors must act promptly and transparently in cases of suspected misconduct—in line with COPE guidelines—and are responsible for communicating any corrections or retractions appropriately.

For Authors

Authors must ensure that the submitted manuscript is entirely original. Authorship must be attributed only to those who contributed to the research and writing of the text. All co-authors must have read and approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to be listed as authors.

Authors must not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal simultaneously.

Authors are responsible for providing references to support their arguments and conclusions, and must not appropriate the ideas of others without proper attribution.

Authors are also responsible for supplying any additional data requested by the editors before or after the editorial decision. Failure to do so may prevent the manuscript from being published. If any significant error or inconsistency is found in the manuscript, authors must report it immediately, whether before or after publication.

The use of generative AI is allowed with caution. Authors may use generative AI and related technologies solely to enhance the clarity and language of the manuscript, but never to replace authorship tasks such as the development of arguments or conclusions. Authors who use generative AI must disclose this use in a note. Responsibility and accountability for the work’s content lies with the authors.

For Reviewers

Reviewers must treat all information provided for the review process as confidential and privileged. They should evaluate manuscripts objectively and impartially, respecting the authors’ theoretical and methodological choices. Mere theoretical or methodological disagreement should not be grounds for rejecting a manuscript. Suggestions, corrections, or requests for revisions must be clear, well-reasoned, and constructive.

Reviewers are responsible for checking that all sources and references are complete and properly cited. If they suspect plagiarism, they must notify the editors immediately.

If a reviewer is unable to complete the review within the designated timeframe or identifies a conflict that prevents them from carrying out the review, they must promptly inform the editors so that the deadline can be adjusted or the manuscript reassigned. Reviewers must also disclose any potential conflicts of interest to the editors.
