“Catch me if you can, Mr Holmes!”: the intersemiotic translation of Moriarty

This article explores the various representations of the villain James Moriarty across three distinct works: The Adventure of the Final Problem by Arthur Conan Doyle (1893), the TV series Sherlock (2010), and the anime Moriarty: The Patriot (2020). We observe the occurrence of topological-metonymic indexical translations (Plaza, 2003) in the adaptations, as compared to the character’s literary depiction in 1893. This process involves the transposition of elements between different semiotic systems while preserving the contiguous relationships that define Moriarty as a criminal genius.
