Abstract

In this article, Lorenzini argues that it is possible to develop a coherent philosophical study of the domain of the perlocutionary as an essential aspect of the performativity of language, and the latter has a moral dimension that has so far been ignored. In particular, he suggests that the study of the perlocutionary, as opposed to the illocutionary, requires us to establish a conceptual distinction between two forms of recognition marked in English: recognition, on the one hand, and what is called acknowledgment, on the other. Finally, Lorenzini explains that there is a specific form of moral responsibility associated with perlocutionary acts and their effects (which are not entirely predictable beforehand): namely “perlocutionary responsibility”.
