Abstract

Permanent contact with the outside world began for the Yanomami Indians
during the 1970s. The results of this contact are revealed in the lexicons of the
Yanomami languages in the use of new words for objects introduced by the
“whiteman”. The following article analyzes borrowings from Portuguese and
neologisms in one of these languages to illustrate some phonological,
morphological, and semantic aspects of the language as well as the areas of
greatest cultural influence resulting from this contact.
